From Beginner Breaks to Real Swell: Where to Surf Around Porto

People are sometimes surprised to hear the guy running a property management company spends his weekends chasing waves — but honestly, surfing is half the reason I love living in Porto in the first place. The city gives you the Atlantic right at your doorstep, and I've never stopped taking advantage of that.

Matosinhos — where I go most
This is my regular spot, and it's where I'd send anyone just starting out. It's close, easy to get to, and the waves are forgiving enough to learn on without getting discouraged. If you're new to surfing and staying with us, this is genuinely the first place I'd point you.

Leça da Palmeira — a step up
A little further along the coast, and the waves get noticeably better. Once you're past the beginner stage and want something with more punch, this is where I head next.

Azurara — for when you want real waves
Further north, near Vila do Conde, and worth the drive if you're a more experienced surfer. The waves here have real quality — this is where I go when Matosinhos feels too calm.

Espinho and Praia da Madalena — the Gaia side
South of the city, across the river, there's a whole other coastline worth exploring. Espinho and Praia da Madalena are both solid, consistent spots, and I like mixing it up between the north and south coast depending on the swell and the mood.

I've got a few other favorite spots too, and I'll keep adding to this as the seasons change — surf conditions here shift a lot depending on the time of year, so what's firing in autumn isn't always what's best in summer.

If you're staying with us and surfing is your thing, ask — I'm always happy to point people in the right direction based on their level and whatever the swell's doing that week.
